How can I increase the street appeal of my house?

Author: Ben Reid - Manager VAA

The first chance you get to make an impression on buyers when selling your own home is online advertising. If your agent has come up with a snappy headline and snagged the buyers with beautifully presented photographs, the next opportunity to wow them is with the street appeal of your home.

Have you ever been out looking for houses? If you have, you could probably recall at least one occasion when you drove up to a house, slowed down for a look and then kept on driving. Without street appeal, it's hard to make a buyer want to get out of the car – especially if they have a whole host of open for inspections to attend that day.

How to get your home looking like a million bucks

As a homeowner it can be very difficult to step back and see the big picture. For example, you may love the apple tree in the front yard, the roses against the south fence and the beautiful red front door you just had fitted. Sounds great, right?

If you step back, perhaps quite literally to the other side of the street, you may see that the apple tree needs pruning or the rotten fruit on the ground needs clearing up, the roses could be contrasting horribly with the rest of the garden and the stunning door might be surrounded by flaky paint. This is a very different picture.

Perspective is a major factor here. Imagining your home from the viewpoint of a professional real estate photographer or a potential buyer should help clear up presentation issues. If you still can't see the wood for the trees, ask a friend or neighbour for their opinion on how you can improve your road frontage. Be warned though – criticism can sting!
