There are so many different programs on our televisions nowadays based around home improvement, particularly “reality TV” programs showing everyday home owners tackling major renovations. So it is no surprise that an increasing number of home owners are choosing to tackle a variety of projects in the home themselves. But how many of them fully understand what is involved and, more importantly, their potential dangers?
Sure, doing it yourself does mean that you have more control over costs and timing. However, if you are not an experienced renovator then learning “on the job” can end up costing far more time and money, not to mention the potential for legal and health issues if your work is not done safely and to standard. So how do you know whether you can do the job yourself, or you need expert help?
Firstly, if you have doubts about your ability to finish a job right from the start, that’s probably a good indication that you shouldn’t start it.
Secondly, if it involves structural, electrical or plumbing works, we would always recommend getting in a qualified expert. These are not areas that are forgiving on the inexperienced.
Last but not least, if you are renovating purely to prepare for your property for sale, make sure you talk to us at Vendor Advocacy Australia BEFORE you spend any money. The emphasis here needs to be on cost-effective changes, not necessarily creating your dream home!
Of course, if you are planning on selling, and would like to avoid other common traps that other sellers make, be sure to get a copy of our FREE book, Fatal Real Estate Traps Exposed while you’re here.
And remember, if you are using qualified tradespeople make sure you ask about their insurance, and don’t be shy about asking for a guarantee of their quality and completion date, or references from recent work.
